The Symphony Vet Center is a 2,200 square foot veterinary
clinic occupying the ground floor and basement of a five-story apartment building
on New York's upper west side. Although initially designed for a single veterinarian
entering into private practice, provisions were made to accommodate the center's
inevitable growth. Thus, it now includes a waiting area with seating for 9 clients
and 2 receptionists, 3 examination rooms, a treatment area with laboratory and
pharmacy facilities, an x-ray and developing room, a surgical theater, workstations
for 2 doctors, and a 30 cage animal ward. While the exterior treatment restores
the building's facade to its original ornamentation, the interior achieves a warm
and residential character by using terra rosa ceramic tile, natural finished maple
paneling and cabinetry, historic paint colors, and reproduction light fixtures.
